PETE DOHERTY. CLASH Magazine Cover Shoot. December.10, 2008.
Lovable rouge with huge charisma. Watching his modern day interview with Louis Theroux, made me think, go back and re-live my moments with him. I had two shoots with this guy almost in succession to each other. One was pure and beautiful as shown with this example; the second was like climbing aboard the express train to hell. Fortunately, this photo represents the good and not the bad and ugly. Charming and charismatic to a fault with groupies in tow it was a music photographers dream day and I upped my game to a new level with some new lighting tricks which came into my consciousness out of the blue on the day even though it was in a hotel room in London which tradionally are notorious ‘dead zones’.
As I’ve mentioned previously, there’s a magic surrounding certain shoots, which for various reasons were indefinably exciting. There’s no better feeling especially when you can clearly see what you’re getting when looking through the viewfinder is visual gold. You’re thrown right in the middle of chaos and out comes the golden egg. After a few Doherty swooning and balladeer moments all around the rooms, this was how it went when you had a willing great artist in your midst. Here he was on maximum overdrive of cool.
This first shoot I got 10-20 shots I’ll always be proud of. I was a Doherty convert praying at the alter. Until a few weeks later when it all fell apart but that’s another story for another day. Ooooo that Rock and Roll eh???
