Silverchair were Australia's great grunge success story, and the scale of what they achieved remains remarkable. Three teenagers from Newcastle, New South Wales recorded Frogstomp in 1994 when singer Daniel Johns was just fifteen years old. The album reached number one in Australia and debuted at number nine in the United States, making Silverchair one of the youngest bands ever to achieve mainstream success at that level. On an international stage dominated by American and British acts, that was genuinely extraordinary.

What followed was a career defined by continuous and sometimes unexpected reinvention. From the heavier grunge textures of Freakshow through the orchestral ambition of Neon Ballroom and the polished craft of Diorama and Young Modern, Daniel Johns, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou refused to stay in the box the world tried to put them in. Johns in particular emerged as one of Australian music's most gifted and restless creative voices, and Silverchair's evolution across their records is one of the more fascinating stories in Australian rock history.
