Pearl Jam

Pearl Jam emerged from Seattle in 1991 as one of the defining voices of their generation. The combination of Eddie Vedder's volcanic vocals, Mike McCready and Stone Gossard's guitar work, Jeff Ament's bass and Dave Abbruzzese's drumming created something that felt completely necessary at the time and has only grown in stature since. Unlike many of their contemporaries, Pearl Jam built for longevity. They fought Ticketmaster, refused to make music videos during their commercial peak, and kept the focus on the music and the live experience above everything else.

Thirty years on, they remain one of the most powerful live bands in the world. The photography documenting Pearl Jam's story is among the most important in rock history. Lance Mercer spent years as the band's primary photographer, producing images of Vedder and the band that capture both the intimacy of their studio work and the sheer physical force of their performances. His access to the band during their formative years produced photographs that have become definitive records of an extraordinary moment in music.
