Robert Smith's contract said he had ultimate say of which photographs could and could not be used by magazines. He wrote back to me saying he “loved all of them except one A record!” A year later I photographed the band again at The Manor (Richard Branson's mansion/studio). Robert said my photos were the “worst he'd ever seen” and rejected every one! Asked to review his choice because it left us with nothing, he relented and passed just half a dozen of my photographs.
