NINE INCH NAILS. CASCADE MOUNTAINS.
Press shot taken as part of ‘The Downward Spiral’ album campaign. Sept 27, 1994.
I was one of the key image-makers for the band between 1991 and 2000. Their live performances were the greatest. Flying bodies, instruments and other paraphernalia flung around the stage nightly along with the liquids and the corn starch the band smothered themselves with prior to going on stage… In other words, the best time ever!!
This was named the ‘self destruct’ tour for good reason. I was massively inspired by their energy so I gave 110% for each photo opportunity that was offered as I loved the band and all involved. For me, It was the best of the era. It started when I met Trent
during the first Lollapalooza tour in 1991 when NIN was mainly Trent and Richard Patrick. Fast forward, by 1994, the time of this shot taken for The Downward Spiral album, the band had expanded to a 5 piece. Trent, Robin Finck, Danny Lohner, Chris Vrenna and James Woolley.
Two days prior, we had a marathon day of shooting in a Seattle photo studio on a off day from the tour. Those studio shots worked out brilliantly but we needed more. Waking up, the morning of the 27 th I suggested the drive to Vancouver B.C. we take a slight detour up through the mountains as I saw news there had been a large fire in a place near Leavenworth so we all piled in the tour bus. This shot was taken in the burnt out trees with slightly fading light which gives it that death rattle feel. It was then made into a giant poster which defined the band at that time.
