Another Favourite job. Her first album ‘Kaleidoscope’ was storming the world. The single ‘Caught Out There’ was getting huge airplay in U.K. so the N.M.E. decided to send me over there. Back then NYC was a Favourite place to visit in order to photograph the great and good. In this case she was a perfect subject. These were the jobs I lived for.
The newer artists were always far more keen to experiment and open to suggestions, which is every photographers dream. So the idea was really to capture something about her personality that set her apart from the crowd. Once I saw her brilliant look and multi rainbow hair, I knew we would get great material. The shoot was to be done in her Harlem flat and fortunately there were a whole series of interesting backgrounds and moods inside. I loved it and her. So ultimately we had a blast and this one shows it. Another job where there was a wealth of material and the NME went with a colour shot of her grabbing the sides of her head and screaming which was the showstopper. & Months later I was sent back again to shoot her again with Moby for another N.M.E. cover.
