This was only a few days after the invasion of Iraq had begun. In my mind I had a specific idea of what I wanted this image to portray. PM as a disciplined, focused, tenacious man. It’s all there in all the stories. He was the one who kept The Beatles from drifting off the main highway. He was the one with his eyes on the road. And it’s been like that through his whole career. He’s still that ambitious 1950s grammar school boy. There’s a much longer story at the core of this experience but in summary, I wasn’t getting the vibe from him that I was looking for, he was too jokey, too light, and when I asked him to ‘just do less, be honest’ he replied
“What’s the matter? You don’t like a bit of whimsy?”
And out of my mouth, meant more in dry jest than anything else, came the words
“Not when there’s a war on, Paul”
And like that, it was all there. A wave coming into shore, it sat there for a moment, going neither in or out, before fizzling into the beach to reveal the raw shingle underneath
Everything I had hoped for was revealed and without stopping to look down at my Mamiya RZ waist level viewfinder I hit two quick clicks of the shutter, praying to the photography gods that it was in focus
