This image of Gerard Way, of My Chemical Romance, was captured during the 2007 ‘Black Parade’ tour in Denver, USA. We were shooting in a rather bland ice hockey arena but despite the less- than-ideal surroundings, I managed to get some great shots against the band’s flight cases.

They had just finished a tricky interview with the journalist from Kerrang! and weren’t in the best mood for the set-up cover shots. However, it was in the quieter moments before they went onstage that I captured this iconic image of Gerard in the dressing room. With his white-faced makeup, there was a raw, vulnerable intensity about him—just minutes before he would transform to his onstage persona.
